5 Essential Safety Rules for Pool Owners

1. Don’t Let Kids Swim Alone

If you have small children in the household, they should never be allowed to swim alone. They should be supervised at all times by a parent or an older child who’s trained in pool safety techniques. All it takes for an accident to occur is a brief period when a parent isn’t watching the kids. Any time your children want to swim in the pool, you should be out there with them.

2. Get CPR Training

If you have a body of water at your home that’s deep enough to result in a drowning, it’s imperative for someone in the home to be trained in CPR. Adults and older children can benefit from knowing proper CPR techniques. If someone inhales water into his or her lungs, CPR could save his or her life.

3. Refrain from Drinking Alcohol

At adult pool parties, it’s common for beer, wine, and other types of alcohol to be served. However, alcohol and swimming don’t always mix. An adult can become inebriated and lose his or her balance, which can lead to a head injury that could cause him or her to lose consciousness and drown. Because swimming involves physical exertion and alcohol is dehydrating, it’s also easy to become overheated or overworked when the two are combined. A weak swimmer who is drunk may be unable to swim to the shallow end or the safety of the wall when he or she grows tired. If you’re having a party, limit the amount of alcohol served.

4. Make Sure Pool Covers Are Off

Another danger that may be lurking in the pool cover. One popular type of cover is a plastic sheet that rests on the water’s surface. It’s possible for children, pets, and even adults to fall into a pool with this type of cover. The person or pet can get entangled and drown. As such, it’s important to make sure the cover is pulled back if anyone is going to be near the pool.

5. Control the Temperature

Water that’s too hot or too cold can be dangerous for smaller children. Before using the pool, ensure its temperature is safe.
